Band members: Margo Meredith, Lonna Whipple and Marie Nelson (fiddle); Jaimi Pamela Halloran (flute); Phyllis Grant (whistles); Gabriel Lawson (clarinet); Roger Burger and Susan Schreiber on guitar; Eric Maxey (cello and fiddle); Arly Helms and Jano Borg on mandolin; Arlene Jamar (accordion); and Ann Meigs (keyboard). All are incredibly talented musicians! Undoubtedly, there will be more players, as the group is continually evolving.
The band was formed by Jaimi Pamela Halloran in August, 2024. This was around the same time Contra Dance Nevada County was restarted in its current form. The music incorporates Celtic music from the Celtic homelands, landed in New England, rolled around in Old Timey music, and is played at a quick pace for the dancers. Its lively, fun-inducing beats offer plenty of latitude for creative interpretations within the music.
Contra Dance Nevada County now holds regular dances on the 3rd Saturday of most months at the Elks Lodge in Grass Valley. The Community Band practices 2-4 times monthly and plays for two local dance organizations.
Calling the dance will be Mielle Chenier-Cowen Rose, CDNC’s “house” caller. Mielle’s welcoming, effervescent style encourages dancers to relax and enjoy themselves. She is convinced that contra dancing can heal the rifts in our society, and strives to share her love for contra by creating a joyful evening of connection and fun.
Foothill Community Contra Dance Workshop with caller Mielle on Saturday, May 2nd 2:30-3:30pm.
